When Amy Coney Barrett was rammed through confirmation to the Supreme Court as a result of Mitch McConnell’s second theft of a Supreme Court vacancy, I was hesitant to jump on the bandwagon of condemning her as a person.
I thought to myself, “yeah, I know she’s against abortion rights, and I know that she knows why she’s there.” But something inside me foretold that she would reach a point where her conscience would whisper, “wait a minute, I just can’t go along with this.”
First, Barrett has begun to question the far right’s singular focus on ancient history when it suits their purposes. “Barrett, the newest conservative on the court, accused Thomas, the most senior associate justice, of a ‘laser-like focus on the history’ that ‘misses the forest for the trees’””
But Barrett may have found her bright red line in the Trump immunity case.
Unlike MAGA, which won’t be satisfied until every damned federal judge bangs their gavels in right wing unanimity with the unison of a church bell choir, I do appreciate the need for a variety of approaches and backgrounds on the Supreme Court. I don’t mind an Amy Coney Barrett with something of a conscience.
But what MAGA seeks is nothing short of a judiciary in which every single judge harbors the maximum possible hostility to individual rights and to minority groups.
In such a world, there would be no need for more than one Supreme Court judge – and I won’t use the phrase “Supreme Court Justice,” because MAGA hates the very ideal of justice with a white-hot passion.
So, I’m keeping an eye on Amy to see how well her conscience continues to bear up.
