Constitutional Convention: Once A Far Right Bogeyman, Now Their Path To Tyranny

It is often said that the accusation is always the confession when it comes from the right wing. This is no different.

There was a time, a few decades ago, when the right wing vehemently opposed the idea of calling a Convention of States, sometimes known as a Constitutional Convention. They argued that anyone who would call for a “Con-Con,” for short, would do so for the purpose of obliterating our Constitutional rights.

The U. S. Taxpayers Party, a full fascist political party that was then distinguishable from the pre-MAGA Republican Party, warned as much: “We oppose any attempt to call for a constitutional convention for any purpose whatsoever, because it cannot be limited to any single issue, and such convention could seriously erode our constitutionally protected unalienable rights.”

The American Family Association, listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, had made it possible to listen to archived programs for American Family Focus for PA. One of them warned about the dangers of holding a Constitutional Convention.

In 2009, a document titled The Pathway to a Marriage Amendment by the virulently anti-liberty group “Faith2Action,” warned against a Con-Con: “In our opinion, a Constitutional Convention is not desirable, as it opens up the possibility that the entire Constitution could be thrown out and re-written.”

With me so far? Good.

The idea of holding a Constitutional Convention began to gain a little traction at the same time that MAGA fascists began talking about carrying out a January 6th-style insurrection. This February 9, 2012 comment on an article written by the same individual who hinted at a Jan. 6 insurrection back in 2011, says as much: “The central Government has over reached, overtaxed, over regulated to the point that the Citizens of this Country are tired of it and are getting real close to a Constitutional Convention to correct the wrongs forced upon us.”

Any attempt to locate the above referenced article in the Wayback Machine will say, “Sorry. This URL has been excluded from the Wayback Machine.” But they were too late to exclude it from me. So, here it is again.

And that brings to today.

It is MAGA, the modern fascist movement itself, that is now calling for a Constitutional Convention. And you guessed it: they want to call a Con-Con for the purpose of obliterating our basic liberties. Its endorsers are a veritable who’s who of the vilest, most fascist, cutthroat MAGA extremists in the nation.

The accusation is always the confession when it comes from the MAGA Reich.
