(Third of a series that will counter highly organized MAGA disinformation about the Constitution that has been sweeping the nation.)
It’s a lie that we’ve heard repeated a million times since 1990, yet one that the mainstream media (MSM) has never bothered or dared to debunk – like ever. “America was founded as a Christian nation,” claims Idaho Family Policy Center, affiliated with the SPLC-designateded hate group Family Research Council. This revisionist history appears time and time again, distorting Supreme Court rulings and basing itself on utter fabrications as well.
Former Trump attorney Jenna Ellis makes the same claim in her DVD “Why America Is a Christian Nation,” made available through the SPLC-designated hate group American Family Association. It’s worth pointing out that this is the same Jenna Ellis who tweeted her support for a murderous Uganda anti-gay law, as Trumpist media was busy bashing Ted Cruz for calling the law barbaric.
And if you think this is an outlier, guess again. In 2015, MAGA candidates for the presidency attended a candidates’ forum whose host called for executing LGBTQ+ Americans. Of the three who attended it, Ted Cruz, Bobby Jindal, and Mike Huckabee, only Ted Cruz to my knowledge repudiated that message.
Maybe, just maybe, this is one reason why MAGA wants to perpetuate the lie that our nation had really been founded with a religious dictatorship in mind?
Yep. But there’s one problem: During the Civil War, there was a movement to declare our country a Christian nation. That movement led to the formation of the National Reform Association. That movement did not succeed, and the organization that initiated it still exists today and is still trying to create its brutal Taliban-like theocracy today.
If this was already a “Christian nation,” why would a movement arise to declare this a Christian nation, and lead to the formation of an organization with that as its objective?
Movements don’t arise to accomplish something that is already a reality. Get the picture?
Let’s briefly recap: The First Amendment expressly forbids anything that even approaches an official religion. Christianity is mentioned only once in the Federalist Papers, and then, only in passing. God is mentioned only once, and describes a benevolent being that bears zero resemblance to the malicious, marauding MAGA god of destruction. President James K. Polk, in his 1845 inaugural address, affirmed that “No union exists between church and state, and perfect freedom of opinion is guaranteed to all sects and creeds.“
If there had been any intention to found an official religious state or caliphate, as MAGA claims, discussion of the matter would have been extensive. It is not.
But why does MAGA want so badly for this lie to be propagated and believed?
Because MAGA craves absolute, unrestricted, unencumbered power that answers to no one and owes nobody an explanation.
Let’s think about “faith-based laws” for a minute. The lowest level of scrutiny in Constitutional law is the Rational Basis Test; i.e. a law that is passed must have some rational basis. If a faith-based law had a rational basis, it could rely on its rational basis with no need for religion to support it. But MAGA needs religion to support their more malicious intentions, therefore laws proposed out of MAGA malice have no rational basis — and are therefore unconstitutional with or without the First Amendment’s Establishment clause.
MAGA doesn’t want to be required to explain themselves. MAGA doesn’t want to be required to justify their actions.
MAGA craves absolute, unrestricted, unencumbered power that answers to no one and owes nobody an explanation.
